Walking Town Meeting

The Walking Town Meeting will be held Saturday, April 30, from 4pm - 6pm.

The walking town meeting is a way for our community to have direct interaction with the Mayor and Council as well as with Senior staff.  This Walking Town Meeting will be focused on our community and its residents.  The residents, the Mayor and Council will start the meeting at the Dawson Farm Park, continue  to Brice, to Hull,  then to the New Elementary School site, a little bit of W. Edmonston  and then back to Dawson Farm Park via Ritchie Pkwy.  Feel free to come for the full walk or just a portion.  

Residents are welcome to bring any issues or observations to the mayor and council. Representatives from different departments will be present to answer questions from the residents as well.  Please try to attend and help make this meeting a success.

The Hungerford Civic Association will be hosting a Walking Town Meeting with the Mayor and Council on Saturday, April 30, 2016, from 4pm to 6 pm.  This is a great opportunity for our community to talk one-on-one with the Mayor and Council, as well as the heads of most of the City departments, about issues and plans for the future .

Crape Myrtle Project Symbolizes the Rebirth of Hungerford Civic Association

On September 9, 2015, the first general meeting of the revived Hungerford Civic Association was held at Elwood Smith Community Center. At the meeting, Frank Cole volunteered to spearhead a project to beautify the area along Cabin John Creek. His idea was to clear the invasive vines and weeds along the Cabin John stream between the bridge entrance to Dogwood Park and the south end of Cabin John Parkway near the retention pond, then plant Crape Myrtles — deer-resistant, non-invasive and drought-resistant trees that have a long bloom time — along the cleared area.

Upcoming General Meeting - January 20, 2016

All residents of the Hungerford Neighborhood are welcome and invited to attend.  

Come meet the new civic association board members and other neighbors and hear about what is happening in and around our neighborhood. City staff will be providing information on several topics of interest and we will be discussing the upcoming Walking Town Meeting with the Mayor and Council in April.

Tower Oaks Community Meeting Rescheduled

The Community Meeting for the Tower Oaks housing development proposal has been rescheduled to September 29, 2015 at 6;30 pm.

Door to Door Solicitation

At our meeting, both the chief of police and Tom Howley from Community Enhancement & Code Enforcement answered questions about folks soliciting door to door in our neighborhood.  All salespeople are required to wear a city-issued badge, an example of which is shown below.

Exceptions to this requirement:

1. Any person who is upon the premises at the request or invitation of the owners or occupants thereof;
2. Persons selling merchandise to manufacturers, wholesalers or retailers for use in their business or for resale;
3. Persons who take orders solely for the delivery of newspapers;
4. Hawkers or peddlers who are licensed pursuant to article VII of this chapter;
5. Any resident person sixteen (16) years of age or less;
6. Any City resident who is soliciting on behalf of and is authorized by a nonprofit organization. 

On #6, if someone was unfamiliar to you and you do not know whether they were a City resident or not, the City suggests that  you simply say "no thanks".   If a person is at all aggressive, you may always call the Mr. Howley's office at (240) 314-8330 and they will send someone out to investigate. If an unlicensed solicitor arrives in the evening, or over the weekend, you may always call the Police non-emergency line at (240) 314-8900 and a Police Officer will investigate.  The Police Dispatch office is provided a list and photocopies of each license holder.

Tower Oaks Housing Development Proposed

An application has been submitted to allow development of a project consisting of a maximum of 375 housing units, including detached houses, townhouses, and condominium units near the intersection of Preserve Parkway and Tower Oaks Boulevard.  This application will amend the previously approval for this site, which currently allows office development.

The project will not be age restricted, but will be attractive to "empty nesters".  The project will provide homes with elevators, homes with one-floor living, and homes with bedrooms and the main level. Current plans are to begin construction in 2018.

A Post-Application Meeting will be held to inform the community as to how the project will be developed and to answer questions.
