Planning for an Addition to Richard Montgomery High School

Feasibility Study for RMHS Addition Project Work Session Meeting #1
On Wednesday, September 28th, the first of three community meetings related to the proposed Richard Montgomery High School addition project will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the RMHS cafeteria. While all are invited to participate in this process, the community is encouraged to send representatives from your respective streets, areas, and associations.  Everyone present will have the opportunity to hear about the study process for the proposed project.
The purpose of this study is to develop conceptual design options for the proposed school project. The meetings address spatial relationships within the school's interior, the pedestrian and traffic flow to the site, and how the proposed project will impact the community at large.
We hope that you will join us to learn more about the proposed addition to RMHS.  If you are unable to attend, there will be two more meetings in the upcoming months:
Work Session Meeting #2--Thursday, October 13th at 7:00 p.m.
Work Session Meeting #3--Tuesday, November 15th at 6:30 p.m. (Part of PTSA Presentation)

Hungerford-Stoneridge Stormwater Management Facility Improvements - Update

Gabe Kosarek, Senior Civil Engineer with the City, presented two options for the upcoming renovation of the Hungerford Stoneridge Pond at two meetings with our community.  The concepts can be viewed here: http://www.rockvillemd.gov/index.aspx?NID=1957

During the meetings, Gabe mentioned two other locations that were similar to the Concept #2. The first facility is the College Gardens SWM facility.  This pond was originally constructed in 2010.   The facility is located near College Gardens Elementary here: https://goo.gl/maps/qQgcYRA2o5H2. Note that the woody debris there is due to be cut back.

The second facility is Sunrise Pond at the Horizon Hill SWM facility.  Construction on this pond was completed this year.  It can be found behind 1913 Sunrise Drive.  Alternatively, you may park at the end of Pebble Ridge Court and enjoy a pleasant ½ mile walk (1 mile round trip) down to the pond and back.  Just walk from the cul-de-sac down towards the basketball court, across the footbridge, and continue on until you reach the pond.  This walk goes past some stream restoration we did as well as part of the project which included relocating the basketball court out of the floodplain.  The location of this facility can be seen here: https://goo.gl/maps/3VmEmn2h6an.

Feel free to share feedback with Gabe.  His contact information can be found at: http://www.rockvillemd.gov/index.aspx?NID=1957

Hungerford-Stoneridge Stormwater Management Facility Improvements

The City of Rockville will be conducting a Community Field Walk this
Saturday to discuss the planning for the rehabilitation of the
Hungerford-Stoneridge Stormwater Management Facility, aka the Hungerford
Stoneridge Pond.

Hungerford neighbors are encouraged to meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday,
Sept. 10 at Hungerford-Stoneridge Park, at the corner of Leverton Road
and Cabin John Parkway, to discuss the concepts, provide input, and ask
questions about the project.

Project Description:
The Department of Public Works (DPW) has begun the design of the Hungerford-Stoneridge Stormwater Management (SWM) Facility Improvements project. Originally constructed in the late 1990’s, the facility treats the runoff from over 450 acres, almost half of which is impervious area such as asphalt, concrete, and buildings. The pond cells and shallow marsh area have accumulated sediment over the years, reducing the facility’s treatment capacity.

At the direction of DPW staff, the city’s consultant, Bayland Consultants and Designers, Inc., has prepared two design concepts for facility improvements. These concepts include deepening and expanding the treatment cells, improving the channel that connects them, and planting new high/low marsh vegetation and trees throughout the facility for wildlife habitat and aesthetics. Detailed information about the concepts and project is available at www.rockvillemd.gov/hungerfordstoneridgeproject

Purpose:
The project goals are to enhance the SWM facility function through sediment removal, wetland enhancement, and modifications to improve facility maintainability and stormwater treatment. The project was recommended in the 2011 Cabin John Watershed Study as a crucial component to the long-term health of the watershed. The study was approved by the Mayor and Council in July 2011, and the project was first included in the adopted Fiscal Year 2016 Capital Improvements Program.

Location:
Cabin John Stream Valley Park at Cabin John Parkway and Leverton Road
.
Timeline:
Design completion: March 2017. Construction begins: Summer 2017.

Cost:
Design: $81,000. Construction: $900,000 (estimated).

Crape Myrtle Project Symbolizes the Rebirth of Hungerford Civic Association

On September 9, 2015, the first general meeting of the revived Hungerford Civic Association was held at Elwood Smith Community Center. At the meeting, Frank Cole volunteered to spearhead a project to beautify the area along Cabin John Creek. His idea was to clear the invasive vines and weeds along the Cabin John stream between the bridge entrance to Dogwood Park and the south end of Cabin John Parkway near the retention pond, then plant Crape Myrtles — deer-resistant, non-invasive and drought-resistant trees that have a long bloom time — along the cleared area.

Upcoming General Meeting - January 20, 2016

Our next meeting is in just a couple of weeks -

Date: Wednesday, January 20, 2016
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Elwood Smith Community Center

All residents of the Hungerford Neighborhood are welcome and invited to attend.

Come meet the new civic association board members and other neighbors and hear about what is happening in and around our neighborhood. City staff will be providing information on several topics of interest and we will be discussing the upcoming Walking Town Meeting with the Mayor and Council in April.
