Hungerford Civic Association Meeting

We will be holding a brief Hungerford Civic Association (HCA) meeting during the Hungerford National Night Out (NNO) celebration. The main items on the agenda will be to discuss changes on the HCA board and plans for upcoming events.

The NNO potluck dinner will be held on Tuesday, August 7th, 6pm to 8pm at Elwood Smith Park. The HCA meeting will take place at 7pm.

Volunteers have stepped forward to fill two openings on the HCA board, but we are still looking for additional volunteers to serve on the interim board or committees (liaison with city, landscape, etc).  Please contact me if you are interested.

Hungerford-Stoneridge turtle relocation and construction

From Gae Kosarek, City of Rockville:

Hello again,
I’m pleased to report that our efforts were successful and our volunteers from MATTS were able to relocate 77 turtles!

Unfortunately, with the lowering of the water level, all of the existing organic matter, and the decaying remains of the fish which were unable to be removed, there will be a bit of an odor from the facility for what we expect will be a short period of time.  We apologize in advance for this.  It is one of the challenges of the project that is difficult to manage.  Please feel free to steer any concerned residents in my direction and/or forward this message through your distribution channels.

It would also be helpful if you could pass along the word that we are advising any curious residents against wandering into the drained area of the facility.  The boundary between firmish ground and that which will suck the shoes right off of your feet is very sudden.

Thanks again for your community’s support and understanding of this project!

Best,
-Gabe

Upcoming Hungerford Events

If anyone has ideas for other neighborhood events, please send in your suggestions! We are also looking for volunteers for events, especially anyone interested in helping pursue Hungerford signage with the City of Rockville.

Sat May 5, 1:30-4pm, Mother’s Day Flea Market & Book Swap
Dawson Farm Park, pavilion (tentative)

Time to pick out gifts for Mother’s Day! Bring a small trinket or book to donate (or both) for the Mother’s Day flea market & book swap, and pick one for Mom. You will get a ticket for each donated item to “buy” one as a gift for Mother’s Day. Kids can also make a craft or card for Mom (free).

Please bring items by 1:30pm.
Additional items can also be purchased for $1 or less - a great way for kids to spend their pocket money for a gift.

Raised funds will be used towards the upcoming neighborhood event - Memorial Day neighborhood parade and picnic.

Stream Clean-up Event

Stream Clean-up Event

Date/Time: Saturday, April 14 from 9 am to noon.

April 14 is the date of the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup, so most of the Rockvillle cleanups will also be held on this day. We clean Dawson Creek, which runs down the middle of Ritchie Parkway, specifically the section from Copperstone Court to West Edmonston Drive.

Bags and gloves will be provided.

A sign-up sheet will be posted later to get count for gloves.

**Meet at the table at Ritchie Pkwy and W. Edmonston. **
Everyone must sign a waiver form (provided). Students can get SSL credit.

We hope that the neighborhood can come together for this event to demonstrate our commitment to our neighborhood. Even an hour of your time would make a difference.

Both Elizabeth Crane and Monica Berger are certified Weed Warriors with MC Parks. We want to use the opportunity to help neighbors identify invasive weeds and tackle some of the porcelainberry and garlic mustard along the creek.
